Judge says lawsuit by fans against Alexei Yashin can proceed

OTTAWA (AP) A lawsuit filed by fans against hockey holdout Alexei Yashin of the Ottawa Senators can go ahead, the Superior Court of Ontario has ruled. Justice Michel Charbonneau ruled that the $27.5 million suit filed on behalf of Senators season-ticket holders can proceed even though the law in this area is ``relatively undeveloped.'' ``In recent times, courts have attempted to give monetary damages for the loss of enjoyment or dissatisfaction with the product purchased when the plaintiff has entered into a consumer contract for some sort of entertainment package,'' he wrote Tuesday in a 17-page decision. ``The plaintiff here has pleaded such a loss.'' Arthur Cogan, the lawyer representing the fans, said the decision was the first time fans have been allowed to sue a player who did not honor his contract with a team. ``It's groundbreaking,'' he said. ``Yashin cannot say any longer, `I can do whatever I want.' ``He's going to have to account to the fans, under oath.'' Yashin is embroiled in a contract dispute with the Senators. He refused to play without a sizable wage increase in the final year of his $3.6-million
deal. The team suspended him Nov. 9 after he refused to play.

12:12 PM 12/16/99
JOB OPENING

Thank you all for your comments in support of me and my our league. I did not know that the BHL had so much effect out there. I am honored to be the comish of such a great bunch of GMs. I wish you all a very merry Christmas and happy New Year. I have decided to give Atlanta one chance to stay in the league providing that he is polite and honest. He has sent me an apology.

I have a new job opening. The position will be called "BHL Chief Justice". This person will receive complaints from the GMs and me about the conduct of persons involved in the BHL. This person will also advise the comish on his(comish) actions and rulings. The comish will hand out all final rulings but the Chief Justice will collect information and or votes on a decision and report them to the comish. The Chef Justice will then hand out any penalties if needed.

For example on this last problem with Atlanta. Atlanta would e-mail the Chief Justice that the Comish denied his bid for a trade and was unfair. The Chief Justice would then get the comish's account of the story. The Chief Justice would then remind the Atlanta GM that there is a rule stating that he has to send his team name along with all e-mails. Then when the Atlanta GM sends an e-mail that is offensive to the Comish, the Comish reports it to the Chief Justice. The Chief Justice would either poll the GMs on a decision or simply advise the comish on a decision. The Comish would then make a ruling that the Chief Justice would hand out. Get the Idea, I need help and advise.

I need a person that is fair, diplomatic, and can be neutral. I tried this before but the person was rude! I need a nice person!! Please e-mail me if you are interested.

Otherwise thank you all, and happy holidays

Comish - Bill Martin

ATLANTA APOLOGIZES

I apologize for my childish message about the team name. I appreciate you for validating the trade, it was very professional of you, thank you. The reason i flipped out like that was because I was under the impression that it was the trade deadline and I had spoken to New Jersey and he said that he had put in the trade, so i figured that you would know what teams were trading. I suppose it didn't help things that earlier this season we had that misunderstanding about the Cary Chao incident. So once again I'm sorry for causing you, and the league, all these problems.

12:12 PM 12/14/99
COMMISSIONER UPSET

Hello,

I hope everyone is having a good holiday season. Unfortunately today is not a good one for me as a commissioner. I started the BHL because I thought it would be fun to play a fantasy League with other people out their in cyber-world. I made it free because I felt that I would get just about as much enjoyment from it as the participants. The BHL started to take up too much of my personal time so I made a program(s) to automate it. The BHL has become much more than a fantasy league. I have come to know most of you through your e-mails and contributions. I hope that I can call mostof you my friends. I find that this part is the most rewarding, except for today. Before you read below please remember that all my contributions are free.

Awhile ago I received an e-mail from the Atlanta GM that he wanted to trade a player with New Jersey. I looked for the author of the e-mail and could not find one. There was no name of a team that I could identify the e-mail with, just an address. I could of looked it up but I made a rule in season two that each e-mail must be accompanied with the Team affiliation. The bottom line is that I only have so much time per day to do BHL. I cant be cross referencing every team to match e-mails with team names. I sent it back requesting a team name. This is what I got in return:

"I (ATLANTA THRASHERS)want to trade Curtis Brown to New Jersey for Petr
Sykora to come here, to the ATLANTA THRASHERS.

ATLANTA THRASHERS
-Chris (GM of ATLANTA THRASHERS)
A T
T H
L R
A A
N S

Now this kind of response made me frustrated and very mad. This person has been nothing but a irritation since he joined. He has retaliated against my judgments in most of his e-mails. At first I made light of it by simulating a courtroom type of atmosphere in which you all made a judgement. The BHL is free and I feel that I should not have to put up with such stressful childish garbage. I don't need it!

Please give me some feedback. Am I being a ass-hole? Should I have to just take it or stop the league entirely? What should I do with this GM? Does he have every right to respond in this way? I really enjoy doing the BHL and my relationship with all the GM's. BUT, I will not continue if I have to take this stressful junk and run the league for free.

In conclusion I would like to apologize for burdening you all with this matter, but I just needed to get it off my chest and also would like some feedback. I respect your opinions and will look forward for your feedback.

Comissioner

Question:
can we still sign players after the trade deadline

-----Comish Message -----
Answer:
So far the program hasn't complained. It does appear however that the Anaheim and Buffalo trade did not go through. I traded them and when I played the simulation the rosters re-set back to Fridays rosters. I will know more after todays simulations. As I said before, I do not know how NHL2000 will impose it's trade deadline. If it imposes there is noting that we can do as it is "in the Game".

TORONTO EXTENDS LEAD

The Toronto Maple Leafs extended their lead with a win today and now lead the second place Pittsburgh Penguins by three points. Could they win the Presidents Trophy?

4:23 PM 12/11/99
BHL STATISTICS A MESS

The BHL and its program that runs it has had a bit of a problem. The comish has run the Saturday games before the Friday games (stupid mistake on his part). Once the stats were fed into the program all the output became squirmy. Sunday the stats page as well as BHL today will be correct.

4:21 PM 12/10/99
TORONTO

The Toronto Maple Leafs are still in the lead, and still seem to have a handle on the Presidents trophy as they win again today..

4:21 PM 12/9/99
TORONTO STILL IN LEAD

The Toronto Maple Leafs are still in the lead, one point ahead of the Penguins with 31 points.

11:50 AM 12/8/99
NEW YORK REBOUNDS

The New York Rangers rebounded well from their absurd performance on Tuesday as they win on Wednesday and now sit in 6th place in the BHL with 26 points. The Edmonton Oilers win big against their league foes Colorado and are now in 12th place in the BHL with 23 points.

11:05 PM 12/7/99
WILD GAME IN NEW YORK

The game against the New York Rangers and the Pittsburgh Penguins got a little out of hand Tuesday when in the end both goalies had been replace and the Devels had racked up 17, yes 17 goals. This is a new BHL record. 17 goals!

12:19 PM 12/6/99
BHL LOSES A DAY

The Comish has become stressed and needed a rest so the League has given him a day off (Sunday) and the BHL started up again Monday. The schedule will reportedly be set ahead by one day according to league officials. According to the Comish's doctor, Dr. Shivago, "Bill will be fine, he has just been to stressed lately. With finals and all." The interview was cut short because of a black out. In other news please be aware that the trade deadline is this Friday at midnight. The comish has had the date on the schedule for some time but Ill bet no one visits that page. It is unsure what the trade deadline will entail because the comish does not know what NHL 2000 prohibits after the deadline date. Bottom Line - Get your important trades and signings in by Friday!

12:54 PM 12/4/99
FLORIDA TRADE FINALLY PAYING DIVIDENDS

The Florida Panthers management is saying "I told you so" to their fans and the Hasek trade has only affected their team in a positive way. They beat the mighty Flyers today and seem to be finding a way to win lately. Meanwhile the Nashville Predators seem to be out of the playoffs and their woes continue.

12:20 PM 12/3/99
LINDROS GOES TO PITTSBURGH

Eric Lindros got traded to Pittsburgh Friday and it showed dividends immediately as the Pens won their game in a big way while the Stars would lose their first game without the Lindros man. The Toronto Maple Leafs lead the league now with 27 points while the Pens are now in second with 26 points.

8:14 PM 11/24/99
NOTHING NEW

Boston and Vancouver still are in a dead heat for the top spot in the BHL. GM's are wondering why players are playing when they feel they shouldn't. The comish would like to remind them that they should have read the coaches corner in which stats that the line choices should be submitted the day before the game. If not tough luck, says Comish. The comish added that the line choices may be still overridden because of the program used. (NHL 2000). Many GM's have quit because of this phenominon.

8:12 AM 11/23/99
BOSTON CLIMBS TO TOP SPOT

The Boston Bruins are in a dead heat with the Vancouver Cannucks for the top spot in the BHL with 20 points a piece. Vancouver fails to win todays game and that combined with Boston's win helped the Bruins catch up in the Presidents Trophy race.

12:30 PM 11/22/99
BHL HAS NEW LEADER

The Vancouver Cannucks are now in sole possession of the top spot in the BHL with 20 points. This could very well be the year of the Cinderella Teams. 11:40 AM 11/21/99

The Presidents Trophy race is going to be an exciting one this season. In other news the Dallas Stars are having management problems and the team could go up for sale as early as next weekend. Hopefully they can sort things out and get back on track.

7:13 PM 11/20/99

ATLANTA BACK ON TRACK, NASHVILLE - RANGERS HAVING TROUBLES

The Atlanta Thrashers are back on track as they beat the Coyotes today and remain on top of the East with Boston hot on their tails. in the West it is the Cannucks absolutely dominating. What has happened to the Rangers and the Predators?

Nov18, 1999
WASHINGTON GIVES UP SCORING FOR BETTER GOAL TENDING

The Washington Capitals are trying to be the second expansion team to win the cup. But first they have to build a championship team. Today they made a huge step towards becoming a team to be reckoned with. They have traded Mike Vernon to Florida for Dominik Hasek. Others were involved in the trade like John Madden going to Washington also for Jason Allison who is one of the best players in the BHL.

Nov17, 1999
ATLANTA LOSES ANOTHER - SHARES LEAD

The Atlanta Thrashers lose their second game in a row and now share the Eastern Conference lead with the up and coming Boston Bruins. In the west the Cannucks have a stronghold lead on the rest of the conference.

Nov16, 1999
REMATCH

The Nashville Predators faced off against the New York Rangers Tuesday morning in a Stanley Cup rematch. The Rangers got revenge as they beat the Preds 3 to 1. The irony is that even though the Rangers haven't climbed into a playoff spot, this game could be the load that broke the camels back for Nashville as they slip to 2-6-1. The Predators are now in 11th place in the West and it is looking hopeless. Meanwhile the Rangers are now in 9th and poised to maybe squeak into the playoff contention.

Nov15, 1999
BUFFALO DETHRONES ATLANTA

The Buffalo Sabers beat the Thrashers 4 to 2 Monday morning to end Atlanta's unbeaten streak. The question is - can they shake it off, or is it through for the Thrashers? Tied for top spot in the BHL with Atlanta now is the Vancouver Cannucks who have snook up on the leaders. Anaheim is not far behind as they have their sights on the Presidents trophy also. The team scoring the most goals in the BHL is the Boston Bruins and the team with the least, suprisingly, is the new Yor Rangers. Wake up boys, and smell the rubber!

Nov14, 1999
PHILLY FALLS

The Philadelphia Flyers lost today leaving the Thrashers the last undefeated team in the BHL. The Thrashers next test will be the Buffalo Sabres at home in Atlanta. The Predators are only 1 game out of the last playoff spot in the west while the rangers are a couple of games out of the east.

Nov13, 1999
THRASHERS BEAT RANGERS

The Thrashers are for real as they knock off the New York Rangers 2 to 1 today almost cementing their hold on the Presidents trophy. Hell even the Stanley Cup for that matter! It was just last season that the expansion team Predators stormed the BHL, won the Presidents Trophy, and went on to win the Stanley Cup. Talking about Nashville, what about them. Well, today they tied today and hopefully are waking up from their sophomore jinx.

Nov12, 1999
New Jersey Makes Big Trade Deal with Anaheim

New Jersey inked a deal with the Mighty Ducks today. New Jersey sent Wade Redden, Brendan Morrison, and Mike Smith to Anaheim for Donald Audette, Jason Woolley, and Chris Wallace. In other news the Nashville Predators are coming alive again as they win their second straight game today. Can they crawl back into playoff contention.

Nov11, 1999
Atlanta Still Unbeaten

Atlanta is still the hot team this season with a 7 and 0 record - Can they go all the way? Vancouver strengthens its hold on the western conference as they have a 2 point lead over second place Anaheim. The team scoring the most goals is the Boston Bruins as they have racked up 29 so far this season. The team giving up the least goals is the New Jersey Devils with a slim 13. The conclusion is ...The East is HOT.

Nov10, 1999
The Champs Finally Win

The Predators finally got a win today snapping their winning drought since their big cup win last season. The Atlanta Thrashers still lead the division and the league as they are still unbeaten. The Vancouver Cannucks have taken over in the West as they lead with a record of 5-1-0.

Nov 9, 1999
Atlanta Rolls On

Atlanta is still unbeaten as they win again today in overtime. Seems like the conviction of their GM hasn't hurt the team at all. In a close second in the BHL and also still unbeaten are the Philadelphia Flyers. The Philadelphia Flyers has been in the BHL since its beginning and the original Owner Chris Rose would be pleased if he saw his team today. Good job Philadelphia. It must be noted that Philly too is waiting out a suspension for a signing violation. Maybe crime does pay.

ATLANTA IS STILL UNBEATEN

Atlanta still unbeaten and winning today as their record is now 5 - 0 - 0. Other teams that are unbeaten are Philly 3-0-2 and the Islanders 2-0-1. In the West the Vancouver Cannucks take the lead with a 4-1-0 record.

BHL Q&A

Nov 6, 1999
NASHVILLE - BELFOUR STRUGGLE

Atlanta is in court for tampering but the BHL should be trying someone for ripping off the Predators. The sophmore jynx is alive and well in Nashville and it has held the Preds winless in 4 games. One now has to wonder if they will even make the playoffs.New Jersey has emerged as the team to challenge Atlanta for the top spot in the BHL as they also are 4 and 0. Boston is proving to be the Bullies of the league as they have been sitting in the box more than any team in the league this year. Call the cops!

ATLANTA IS MAKING ITS MARK

It seems as though all we hear about these days is Atlanta. In the League they are number one and still undefeated. Then there is the GM that has been taken onto custody by BHL officials for tampering and fraus. The court is in session and we will bring you the latest details. In the West Chicago seems to be hitting stride as they are 2-0-1 and leading that division over the Avalanche who are 2-1-0. What happened to the Stanley Cup Champs, well they are momentairly in the cellar. BHL's sister team the PSUC Cardinals take to the ice this weekend - Good luck Cards.

COMISH GETS PAT ON BACK

Atlanta is still hot, and Nashville is still not. On the BHL home front, Chicago GM writes"This letter is to Bill Martin for the hard work he does with the BHL.Thanks I am having fun with my new team this season.AL Baumeister GM. of the Ch. Blackhawks". The Comish, who is currently working on a civil case against a team that is unknowen at this point, says, "The league is really blessed to have a GM like Al, I wish the best for his team".

ATLANTA EXTENDS WINNING STREAK

Atlanta is hot, winning their third straight game today against the great Colorado Avalanche. When interviewed earlier this week, the Atlanta GM remarked, "Well, I think the reasons why we are doing so well is that Grant Fuhr and Ken Wregget are playing excellent hockey. Our defence are also shutting down the opposition and minimizing quality shots against us. Hopefully, we can continue this throughout the season." At the other end of the league is the Huricanes who seem to be struggling with a 0 and 3 record. Even with todays loss, Colorado still leads the BHL in scoring as they have logged 14 goals in just 3 games. The easiest team to score upon is the Toronto Maple Leafs as they have been tagged for 13 goals in 3 games.

BHL Q&A

NASHVILLE LOSES ANOTHER

Nashville lost their second game in a row on Tuesday as they lost to the New Jersey Devils. Atlanta is still the surprise of the league as they still remain unbeaten. They will go up against the mighty Avalanche tomorrow.

BHL Q&A

Q: The GM of the Flyers writes => I am suspended for 2 weeks, but does this mean that I can't change lines and starting goalies.

A: No you can still set your lines and select strategies.

Q: James GM NY islanders writes => it seems that the team i beat (Toronto maple leafs) got a tie recorded in the standings instead of a loss.

A: The new NHL rule is that each team that goes into overtime is awarded with a point. You went into overtime and no one recorded a loss because it was an overtime game in which Toronto received a point for the tie.

TEAMS ON HOT STREAK

Atlanta, Chicago, and Colorado are the hot teams of the BHL today as they all boast a 2 and 0 winning streak. Colorado is no suprise and Chicago as well; but what about Atlanta? They are off to a great start. It was just last season that the expansion Predators went all the way to take the Cup in their first year. Go Thrashers!.

BHL Q & A

Q: Florida Panthers GM writes: how come garth snow played goalie instead of hasek in my first game against
the sabares

A: If you read the Coaches Corner Page in the BHL Online Web Site you will read a disclaimer that the Comish is not responsible for Computer assigned players. If you specified before your game on which goalie to start then there still is a possibility that the NHL 200 game will assign (or override) your selections. For complete understanding of the problem do the following:

1) Start a season in NHL 2000 or NHL 99 and assign user control to all of the teams - Like you will be the comish and will do the simulations.
2) Go to coaches options within the season that you just created and assign goalies to each team.
3) Now simm some games. Don not p[lay them, but simm them (No graphics).
4) Now look at each of the game summaries. You will see that the computer will over ride your goalie assignments in some if not all instances.

In conclusion, this is a bug with the EA Sports game itself and should be taken up with them.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Russ of the Phoenix franchise writes: I sent an e-mail yesterday about wanting to goalie Craig Roy. Did that go through? If not, how do I sign free agents?

A: In some cases I will not get to the next set of e-mails until in the evening instead of morning due to school or work. To compound the problem, some of you are in different time zones. Whenever you do not get a conformation within 48 hour e-mail me another, but wait at lease 48 hours. I'm a busy Comish.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Jens Ebbesen of the Washington Capitals writes: I have tried to contact Nicklas from Nashville but none of my
mails is getting through - is the link on the team-page correct ?

A: The link is correct. Notice that the domain is .edu. He is probably (I know for a fact) really busy with homework not to mention defending the net for Plattsburgh State University. He is in the same boat as I am, Computer Science Degree!! He is a busy GM. If there is an offer that you would like to propose and you cannot get through just e-mail me the question and Ill post it in the next issue of BHL Q & A.

Training Camp Goes On, Contract negotiations Pay off

BHL Front Office - The commissioner was absolutely overwhelmed by the negative feedback about player salaries. Seems as though some players, mainly goalies were overpriced. The commissioner has responded by re-working the salaries and now is done. "This is the last adjustment, I think it is time to get on with the season", remarked the comish. The season should start by next weekend as this salary bug has took up the whole weekend. The only thing left to do is the Main BHL web program, which needs to be modifies to accommodate two new teams. The website has been updated so visit your favorite links to view the changes.

BHL Questions

Anaheim GM Richard Luu writes - Hi, are you still using NHL 99? How do you determine the salaries? Also, who are those players on the free agents list, I've never heard of most of those guys. Are they that good(5 million dollar goalies)?

A:
No I am using NHL2000 for BHL4

Q:
Who are those players on the free agents list, I've never heard of most of those guys. Are they that good?
