New Photos
Submitted by Bill on Thu, 06/12/2003 - 8:30pm
The latest photos are now ready for viewing in the digital photography area. These pictures include the hell hike - Blake and Colvin. The hike was 12 1/2 hours long and included 18 miles. Looking back, we took the wrong trail and ended up doing all the mountains in the ridge leading up to Blake and Colvin. This is the reason for the lack of pictures ... with the mishap ... not to many taken.

A new photo now tops the charts in the digital photography section. This is a beautiful springtime picture of some flowers that I took during a recent hike. I have it as my desktop and I have received requests for the print. I love this one and it is quickly becoming one of my favorites of all time. Check it out in the section digital photography.
Dehydration - A Important Reminder, an Important Lesson
Submitted by Bill on Mon, 06/09/2003 - 12:55pmRecently I went hiking and thought that I could extend my hike without water. The effects were very bad and I am lucky to have that behind me. I should know the dangers as I have raced mountain bikes for ten plus years. Once and a while we must remind ourselves the basics. Below is from some research I did on the net.
Dehydration is a condition in with the body's water output exceeds water input. Dehydration may develop from either an inadequate water intake or from excessive water loss. Dehydration resulting from as little as a 1% to 2% loss of body weight can impair physiological and performance responses. Symptoms can include thirst, fatigue, weakness, and loss of appetite. Dehydration resulting from a 3% to 4% loss of body weight can further impair physical performance. Symptoms can include dry mouth, reduced urine output, flushed skin, impatience, and apathy. Dehydration resulting from a 5% to 6% loss of body weight can result in heat exhaustion. Symptoms may include difficulty in concentrating, headache, irritability and sleepiness. Dehydration resulting from a 7% to 10% loss of body weight can result in heat stroke and death. Symptoms may include dizziness, spastic muscles, loss of balance, delirium, exhaustion, and collapse. Symptoms of dehydration can progress rapidly from thirst, to weakness, to exhaustion and delirium and end in death if not corrected.

Orange County Choppers, led by the father- and-son team of Paul Sr. and Paul Teutel Jr., will custom-make Comanche Bike on episodes set to air on Discovery Channel in July at a date to be determined. The show ”Ultimate Machines“ will feature Comanche in a 12-minute segment during a one-hour documentary about high-tech helicopters. The episode airs on Discovery some time in October. Each week ”American Chopper“ documents the making of theme motorcycles by Orange County Choppers (OCC) of Rock Tavern, N.Y.
