Bear Creek Lookout
Submitted by Bill on Sun, 02/17/2008 - 12:12pmJust posted some photos from yesterday's trip with some friends to Bear Creek Lookout. I am currently uploading a video on YouTube (look for a video called "Bear Creek Overlook") so I do not know if it will go up or how it turned out yet. Check in my gallery to see if it is there. For a photo only check out my Picassa gallery.
Pedal Punk
Submitted by Bill on Fri, 02/15/2008 - 9:19pm
I was not called a pedal punk, it's my word. The word sounds good and it is essentially what I felt I was being called. After all ... this blog is mine and it is about how I feel. Also the phrase is more flavorful and is needed to post a lesson learned ... or at least another "Bill Quote".
I wanted to go on an adventure with a bud but we got into a little tuff and now I may be on my own.
Let's say you propose to do a 4 hour ski with me and I say that I have to really watch my training now that the season is close. So I suggest that I ski for only 2 hours and just hang out at the car until you get done. Would that irritate you? This guy suddenly starts calling me a "pus" and even though I know he is kidding I think he has forgotten that he physically died last week on a long trip. So why would I put myself into a similar position this season?
So calling me a pus angered me. Then, being a man with certain chemicals, I challenged him to a race and suddenly we are talking about a 2 day trans-Bitterroot adventure that would kill both of us. I started feeling as if I were being called a asphalt junkie and pedal punk.
So then it came down to a bet and then I realize that the most important thing is my summer races. So now I may owe him 100 dollars and have to submit to his supremacy. So you tell me, what happened? By-Polar ... Testosterone ... Bad diet?
I have this other friend that keeps talking like he battling a sickness like he has some kind of control over it. "Dude", I say "you don't have any control over it and you are right where you are supposed to be". Ok that's another rant but I made up a saying to make my point. Anyway I would like to devote my latest saying to him as well as today's situation. here it is ... "Don't fight it, ride it!"
So that is what I am going to do ... ride it! This summer is going to be great and I can not wait. Any one got 100 bucks I can borrow!

To Deer Creek and Back
Submitted by Bill on Thu, 02/14/2008 - 10:24pmTonight's training plan was to do an endurance cross-training (not cycling) workout. I could not help it and when I got home I hopped on my bike and headed up Pattee Canyon. I can still call it cross training because I went with hiking boots and traps. I knew hiking would be part of the adventure. [map]
Soon the pavement (wow it has been warm) turned to snow at the top of the climb. This was my goal, to get on to some snow terrain. Once I arrived at the most South point of the road where it turns back to East Missoula I headed up past the gated road. It was not the snowmobile trail I expected but logging action meant that this road was well traveled. Perfect!
I did not want to turn around but did. I arrived at the Crazy Canyon Parking Area and headed up that road to the Treasure Trail. Once on the summer favorite I came back into town finally descending the Fire Road.
I recommend the rout past the gate on the Deer Creek Road as well as the Crazy Canyon Road. The Treasure Trail will require a true "Fatty" or studded tires (very icy). The ride was awesome and it brought life back into my training. Nice to be riding again!
Deer Creek Snow Sneak
Submitted by Bill on Thu, 02/14/2008 - 9:30amHappy Valentines Day!
Tonight I go snow biking up Deer Creek! The plan is to go up Pattee Canyon Road and around into the Deer Creek Drainage. Hopefully snow machines or 4-wheelers will have gone up the drainage towards Miller Peak. If not I will come back down the Treasure Trail. Feel free to comment or contact me if you want to go.
