Sawmill Gulch MTB Loop
Terrain Distance (approx): 3.8 miles
Climbing Distance: 1,224 feet
Highest Altitude: 4,371 feet
Trip Time: .75 hour
Difficulty: moderate
Start off heading up to Sawmill Gulch on the single track that borders the access road to the Sawmill Gulch Trail head. Pass the trail head and head on out into the big open meadow.
Take a left turn going West and start climbing and going towards some woods at the far end. You will climb into several meadows until you reach a saddle with views West. The trail will start a decent.
Notice a well worn track going to the left and uphill. Take that is you are a good climber ... if not go down and back into the meadow. If you are climb until you reach the power lines and then descend back to Sawmill Gulch.
All in all the next part starts at where the sign indicates a new trail going up the gulch. This would be the second right from the trail head. Start up the trail and come to a swift turn right and onto a old road that climbs out of the end of the gulch. Climb to the top and then go right and follow the trail down and start the twisting decent back down to Sawmill Gulch. That is it ... head back to the car.
Another variation I did today was to take a left at the top of the last climb and then a right back down Curry Gulch. Then I continued on to do the Wallman trail by taking a hard left onto the Spring Gulch trail.
I give this section 4 stars ... not long enough for a five star but the downhills are a scream.
