A River Runs Through It
Terrain Distance (approx): 12.2 miles(rt)
Climbing Distance: 1,300 feet
Highest Altitude: 4,836 feet
Trip Time: 2 hours
This ride took me two hours but I think it would be more like an hour and a half if I would not have double flatted and had to walk the remaining 3 miles. The guide book says that this area was where the book "A River Runs Through It" was conceived.
To access this trail head travel from Bonner on route 200 to the Blackfoot River Recreation Corridor. Then travel down that road (I would bike it next time as it is dirt) until you reach the Whittaker Bridge. Park to the left just after the bridge.
Start by crossing the bridge and taking the most immediate left past the gate. Directions from there are just to follow what looks like the best path. The first part is rolling but what I found cool was the large rock to the left overlooking the river. Every time you think you are about to begin a climb then you descend.
The climb does come though and soon I found myself with great lookouts along a grassy path (old logging road with grass starting to take over). Steep slopes greet you and keep going though even though it looks like the trail deteriorates. Come to the end of the road literally. Climb from the bike and ascend to the ridge top for great views. The downhill is to be taken cautiously. Enjoy the views. I tried bombing the last part only to double flat.
Caution, the rocks are sharp and abundant here.
OTHER ROUTES: An alternate ride is to take the trail across from the parking lot turn off. Follow the old railroad bed along the river. Cross a creek and continue following the road until the road connects with the corridor. Ride back to the car on the road. I give this ride 3 stars because of the great views.
